Career Durability: The Metric Nobody Is Tracking

Salary, title, and tenure are lagging indicators. Career durability is the leading indicator nobody is measuring, and the AI economy makes it the metric that matters.

Professionals track the wrong metrics. Salary tells you what the market thought of you when the contract was signed. Title tells you what the company decided to call you. Tenure tells you how long the arrangement has lasted. None of these tell you whether the structural position you occupy is durable. All of them are lagging indicators. The leading indicator is durability itself, and almost no one is tracking it. The AI Career Index exists to make that metric trackable.

What durability actually means

Career durability is the probability that your role's structural value holds across the next 24 months given the trajectory of the market acting on it. It is not the same as job security. Job security is about whether your current employer keeps you. Durability is about whether the role itself remains structurally valuable enough that someone will keep you — including the next employer, the next industry, and the next 24-month chapter of your career.

A role can be highly durable inside a company that is failing. A role can be undurable inside a company that is thriving. The two readings come apart all the time, and the durability reading is the one that travels with you. The durability reading is also what determines your bargaining power, because the credible alternative offer is the lever that drives compensation.

Why nobody measures it

Nobody measures durability because nobody had a tractable way to measure it until structural scoring frameworks emerged. The variables that determine durability (authority scope, routine cognitive load, market alignment, value-capture model, regulatory protection, relationship-bearing layer, AI-tooling exposure) were not collected systematically and were not weighted consistently. Without a stable model, durability was a feeling, not a number. Feelings are not actionable.

The framework was also not particularly useful before AI compression became visible. When the labour market was changing pay for slowly along familiar dimensions (industry shifts, generational waves, recession cycles), the lagging indicators (salary, title, tenure) were close enough to reality. Now the labour market is changing pay for along a new dimension at speed, and the lagging indicators are giving false-positive readings: salary stable, title intact, tenure compounding, durability falling.

How structural scoring solves this

Structural scoring solves it by collecting the underlying variables in a standardised way and producing a deterministic reading. The output is reproducible. Two professionals with similar structural inputs produce similar durability scores, which is exactly the property a useful metric needs. Personality tests, by contrast, deliberately produce different outputs for different individuals because their job is to differentiate, not to measure.

The AI Career Index decomposes durability into measurable components: Compression Exposure Index for present-state pressure, Authority Band for structural altitude, Authority Migration Probability for directional pressure, Structural Archetype for positioning pattern. The composite reading is the durability metric.

Why durability is not the same as 'AI risk'

AI risk is one input to durability, not the whole of it. A role can be highly durable for non-AI reasons (regulated profession, physical-presence work, source-bearing relationships) while still showing meaningful AI risk on routine production tasks. A role can be highly exposed to AI but durable through licensure protection. Durability is the integrated reading that combines AI exposure with the other moats: accountability, presence, relationships, judgement, regulatory licensure.

What to do with a durability reading

High durability reading. Defend and protect the position. Strong positions are the easiest things to lose through neglect. Use the reclaimed cognitive bandwidth to invest in the relationships and architecture-layer work that compounds the position.

Moderate durability with downward AMP+. Run a structural intervention now while you still have the time runway. The 6-Month Acceleration Plan addresses exactly this configuration.

Low durability. The migration is the priority, not the optimisation of your current position. The executor-to-architect playbook is the canonical move; the how-to-pivot reading covers the lateral options.

Why the metric matters now more than before

A decade ago, durability and salary were closely correlated; tracking salary was a reasonable proxy for tracking durability. The AI economy has decoupled them. Salary is now a lagging indicator that overstates durability for professionals in compressing roles (the salary lasts longer than the position) and understates it for professionals in appreciating roles (the salary lags the structural improvement).

The professionals who track durability directly — through structural scoring frameworks, regular re-assessment, and explicit attention to the moves that move the metric — are positioning ahead of those who continue tracking the lagging indicators. Salary and title still matter; they're just no longer enough.
