The Five Dimensions of Career Durability

The AI Career Index scores career durability across five weighted structural dimensions. Each captures a distinct axis of insulation against compression.

The AI Career Index scores career durability across five structural dimensions, each weighted to reflect its contribution to structural insulation in the current AI economy. The five are not independent: they interact, and a career with high scores on three dimensions and a collapsed score on one is still structurally fragile. The AI Career Index methodology covers the full scoring engine. This article walks through what each dimension actually measures.

1. Strategic Clarity (25%)

Strategic clarity is the highest-weighted dimension because it is the layer that organises every other layer. It measures how explicitly the professional has defined a directional objective over the next three years, how coherently their current work aligns with that direction, and how legibly that direction reads to external stakeholders. Clarity is not about ambition. It is about whether the professional is making decisions against a fixed reference point or opportunistically, and the difference compounds over time.

2. Income Leverage (20%)

Income leverage measures how much of the economic value a professional creates flows back to them versus their employer, how diversified that capture is across time-based, performance-based, and ownership-based sources, and how durable each source is under market pressure. High leverage means the configuration of the work, not luck or hours, captures disproportionate value. See how to calculate your AI wage compression for the specific dollar-level reading.

3. AI Adaptability (20%)

AI adaptability measures the professional's practical fluency with current AI tooling inside their actual workflow, not their general awareness of AI as a trend. It is the single most-underestimated dimension in the index. Professionals who have integrated AI into their daily production layer and migrated their own time upward into the judgment layer score high. Professionals who follow AI in the news but do not use it to compose their workflow score low, regardless of title or seniority. See AI tooling fluency for the specific skill definition.

4. Skill Resilience (20%)

Skill resilience measures whether the professional's skill set is concentrated in a layer AI can already reach or distributed across layers that require human judgment, accountability, or physical presence. It is not about skill quantity. A senior operator with a narrow high-performing specialism in the substitutable layer reads less resilient than a mid-level professional with a spread of judgment-bearing capabilities. See the substitutable layer framework for the structural definition.

5. Market Alignment (15%)

Market alignment measures whether the professional is operating in an industry and at a role altitude where market demand is appreciating or compressing. It is the lowest-weighted dimension because alignment alone does not insulate a role: a marketing manager in a booming industry can still compress if they sit entirely in the production layer. But combined with the other four, market alignment turns durability into compounded appreciation rather than stable hold.

How the dimensions combine

The five scores combine into a composite on a 0 to 1,000 scale via fixed weights, not personalisation. Same inputs always produce the same outputs. Bands are interpretation layers on top of the composite, and the Acceleration Plan targets the weakest dimension as the bottleneck, because structural systems are bottlenecked by their weakest component. Improving any other dimension while the bottleneck remains stuck yields almost no overall movement.

Why these five and not others

The five dimensions were chosen empirically rather than intuitively. Early versions of the framework included nine dimensions, each plausible as a career-durability factor. When applied to real case data and calibrated against observed outcomes, four of those dimensions either collapsed into other dimensions (e.g., 'learning agility' was fully absorbed by AI Adaptability) or showed near-zero independent predictive power. The five that remained produce a composite that empirically correlates with real structural outcomes across 12 to 24 month case windows.

The specific exclusions matter. Personality factors (extraversion, conscientiousness, agreeableness) were excluded because they did not add predictive power once the structural dimensions were scored. Years of experience was excluded because its correlation with outcomes was fully explained by Authority Band, which is a more precise measure of what experience is supposed to signal. Industry prestige and educational credentials were excluded for the same reason: they correlate with outcomes only because they correlate with one of the five structural dimensions, and scoring the dimension directly is more informative.

How the dimensions interact

The five dimensions are not independent in practice. High Strategic Clarity makes income-leverage moves easier to execute, because the professional has a directional reference point to negotiate against. High AI Adaptability compounds with Skill Resilience, because AI-adjacent skills are structurally resilient to compression. Low Market Alignment amplifies the drag of weakness in any other dimension, because a compressing market magnifies individual-level compression. These interaction effects are why the composite reading is more useful than any single dimension, and why improving one dimension in isolation yields less than the linear improvement in the composite.

The most instructive interaction is between AI Adaptability and Income Leverage. Professionals who integrate AI into their production workflow typically reclaim 8 to 15 hours per week that they can redirect into higher-altitude work. If they capture the value of that reclaimed time (via scope expansion, advisory work, or direct negotiation), both dimensions rise together. If they do not, only AI Adaptability rises and Income Leverage stays flat, which produces a readable but structurally weaker reading.

Self-scoring each dimension

A first-pass self-score on each dimension is possible with a few targeted questions. Strategic Clarity: can you state your three-year authority objective in one sentence, and does your current calendar reflect that objective? Income Leverage: what percentage of your total annual compensation sits in sources other than your primary salary, and is any of those sources defensible against market compression? AI Adaptability: how many of your weekly workflows have AI tooling integrated as the production layer, versus how many you do manually as you did two years ago?

Skill Resilience: of the top five capabilities you were hired for, how many are in the substitutable layer that AI can already reach, and how many require judgment, accountability, or physical presence? Market Alignment: is your industry's five-year outlook positive, neutral, or negative, and are you positioned at an altitude inside the industry where demand is growing or shrinking? The substitutable layer framework helps answer the Skill Resilience question precisely.

The bottleneck principle

Because the dimensions interact, structural systems are bottlenecked by their weakest component. A career with scores of 85 in four dimensions and 30 in the fifth reads as durable in four ways and fragile overall, because the fifth dimension determines where the compression hits first when pressure arrives. This is why the six-month Acceleration Plan targets the weakest dimension specifically rather than working on all five simultaneously.

The bottleneck principle has a practical implication: a reader who has just received their first AI Career Index reading should resist the urge to improve the dimension they already score highest on. It feels like an easier win, because they already have competence in that area, but it produces almost no movement in the composite. Improving the weakest dimension, even by a small amount, can produce more composite movement than a large improvement in the strongest dimension.
