How to Calculate Your AI Wage Compression

How to Calculate Your AI Wage Compression

Your exposure score is only half the picture. The other half is the dollar value of your wage routed through routine work AI can do.

Exposure scores are useful but abstract. Wage compression makes the same reading concrete in dollars. If you know your median wage and the routine share of your work, you can calculate roughly how many dollars of your annual compensation are routed through the layer AI can already reach. This is the number that actually moves behaviour because dollars are concrete in a way that percentages aren't.

The calculation

Wage compression exposure equals your median annual wage multiplied by the routine share of your task composition. If a bookkeeper earns $47,000 and 60% of the typical bookkeeping week is routine production work, the wage compression figure is $28,200. That is not a prediction of job loss. It is the size of the wage envelope sitting inside work AI can substitute, which is the amount at structural risk of wage shifts over the next 24-36 months.

The AI Career Index publishes this number for every role with BLS wage data, visible on each role page and in the top 25 wage compression leaderboard. For bookkeepers, paralegals, and routine data analysts, the wage compression figure typically sits between $20,000 and $35,000. For high-wage knowledge workers in high-exposure roles, it can exceed $70,000.

Why the dollar figure matters more than the percentage

A 60% exposure score reads the same whether the wage is $30,000 or $300,000. The percentage does not tell you how large the compression bill is; the dollar figure does. For a senior professional earning $200,000 with a 60% routine share, the wage compression figure is $120,000 — an amount large enough to reorganise a career around. For a junior with the same percentage but $50,000 wage, the figure is $30,000, which triggers a different set of moves.

The dollar framing also changes the urgency calculation. A 60% exposure on a $50,000 wage is concerning; a 60% exposure on a $200,000 wage is the largest financial risk most professionals face in their career, and the structural intervention pays for itself many times over.

Worked example: senior marketing manager

Inputs: $135,000 wage, 50% routine share (campaign execution, reporting, content production).

Wage compression figure: $67,500. The amount of your annual wage sitting inside work AI tooling can substantially substitute over 18-24 months. Not lost yet, but at structural risk if you don't migrate.

Action read: the architect-layer migration is the high-leverage move. Compress the routine 50% to 25% via AI tooling, redeploy the reclaimed time to brand strategy and stakeholder navigation, and the wage-compression figure falls from $67,500 to about $33,000 in 12-18 months. The migration pays for itself many times over.

How to shrink the number

The wage compression figure decreases when either the median wage rises faster than inflation (which signals market appreciation of your role) or the routine share of your work falls (which means you've migrated into the durable layer). Both directions are achievable, and both point to the same migration: move into work where the accountability, judgement, or client relationship is structurally human.

Roles that make this migration typically see their wage compression figure fall by 30-50% over 24 months. Roles that don't see the figure stay flat or grow as the routine share of their work expands while AI tooling absorbs more of it.

A caveat on the model

Wage compression is a structural estimate, not a forecast of realised loss. It measures the dollar envelope at structural risk, not the probability that AI realises the full substitution. Actual labour market outcomes depend on adoption speed, firm-level automation decisions, regulatory and licensure protection, and whether individuals migrate upward before the compression becomes personal. The number is a planning figure, not a prediction.
