Structural Archetypes: The 6 Career Postures of the AI Era

Structural Archetypes are not personality types. They are configurations of how a professional creates and captures value in the AI economy.

The AI Career Index sorts every professional into one of six structural archetypes. Each archetype is a posture, not a personality: it combines where authority sits inside the role, how value is captured by the professional versus the employer, and how exposed the work is to AI substitution. The archetype is a property of the position, not the person. Two professionals who answer a temperament test identically can land in completely different archetypes because their roles are structured differently. Two professionals with completely different temperaments can land in the same archetype because the structure of their work is similar. That is precisely what makes the framework useful for navigating an economy that is wage shifts positions, not personalities.

The six archetypes are derived from the AI Career Index assessment combined with the role-baseline data on role directory. Each archetype combines three structural readings: where authority sits inside the role, how value is captured by the professional versus the employer, and how exposed the role is to AI substitution. The output is a posture description that is immediately recognisable to the professional but not derivable from their job title alone.

Why postures, not personalities

Personality is a stable trait. Posture is a structural choice. The AI Career Index treats your archetype as the posture you have currently adopted relative to value creation, value capture, and authority. That posture can be deliberately changed; that is the point. If your assessment surfaces an archetype that sits inside the compression zone, you can migrate. The framework gives you the next adjacent posture and the structural moves to get there.

This is the inverse of personality assessments. Personality tests tell you who you are; the implication is acceptance, not change. Structural archetypes tell you the posture you have adopted; the implication is that the posture is changeable, often substantially, often within 12-24 months of deliberate work. Whether or not the change is desirable depends on your structural position and the Authority Migration Probability of your current archetype.

The six archetypes

1. The Specialist Operator. Deep functional expertise applied at the operator band. Strong at production, valued for technical depth, structurally exposed to compression as the production layer of the function automates. Common in mid-career analysts, designers, engineers, marketers. Migration target: Specialist Architect (deeper technical depth at the architect layer) or Operator Architect.

2. The Operator Generalist. Broad scope across the operator band, often a manager or coordinator role. Strong at orchestrating, valued for breadth, structurally exposed because the orchestration layer is partially substitutable as AI takes over the routine coordination. Common in mid-level managers, project leads, ops generalists. Migration target: Architect Generalist (broad scope at architect layer) or Specialist Architect.

3. The Specialist Architect. Deep functional expertise applied at the architect band. Owns the design of systems within a specific function. Insulated by the depth of expertise plus the architect-layer accountability. Strong appreciation track. Common in senior individual contributors with strategic ownership: principal engineers, senior partners in professional services, lead specialists with named accountability.

4. The Architect Generalist. Broad scope at the architect band. Owns systems across functions and orchestrates senior collaboration. Insulated by cross-functional authority. Strong appreciation track. Common in heads of department, COOs, senior product leaders. The strongest single archetype in the AI Career Index dataset for sustained durability over 5+ years.

5. The Authority Bearer. Operates at the top of the authority stack. Personal accountability for outcomes that affect organisations or institutions. Most insulated archetype. Common in CEOs, partners with named accountability, senior judges, board chairs. Migration into this archetype is the rarest move in the dataset (roughly 5% of senior architects make it) but it represents the most durable structural position the framework measures.

6. The Migrant. Currently sitting in a compressing structural position with active migration in flight. Not a stable archetype but a transitional one. Common during the 6-12 months when a professional is executing the executor-to-architect migration. The plan inside the AI Career Index Premium tier is calibrated specifically for migrants because the moves required during the transition differ from the moves required at any of the five stable archetypes.

Where each archetype sits on the compression curve

Specialist Operator sits in moderate-to-high exposure. Production-layer compression hits the role first. Migration window is open but narrowing.

Operator Generalist sits in moderate exposure. The orchestration layer is more durable than pure production but the AI tooling is closing in on it.

Specialist Architect sits in low exposure. Deep expertise at the architect layer is one of the most durable knowledge-work positions.

Architect Generalist sits in low exposure with strong appreciation. The architect-and-cross-functional layer is what AI productivity gains compound into.

Authority Bearer sits in the lowest exposure tier. The accountability moat is dominant.

Migrant sits in active transition. Exposure depends on origin and destination archetypes; the structural readings move during the migration.

Migration paths between archetypes

The 6-Month Acceleration Plan uses your current archetype as the starting point for a structural migration. Not every archetype can migrate to every other in six months. Some migrations require a 12 or 24 month runway because they involve genuine structural relocation rather than positional adjustment.

Specialist Operator → Specialist Architect. 12-18 months. The deepening migration: same depth, lift the band. The most common high-value move.

Operator Generalist → Architect Generalist. 12-18 months. The broadening-and-lifting migration.

Specialist Architect → Architect Generalist. 18-24 months. The broadening migration: extend scope across functions while holding architect band.

Architect Generalist → Authority Bearer. 5-15 years. The longest migration in the framework. Authority Bearer roles are scarce relative to Architect roles by design.

Migrant → any stable archetype. Defined by the migration in flight; the destination is determined by the structural moves the plan recommends.

Why the archetype matters more than the score

Two professionals with the same overall AI Career Index score can be in completely different structural positions. The score collapses a multi-dimensional reading into one number; the archetype preserves the structural shape. When professionals come back to the dashboard months later, they tend to remember their archetype long before they remember their score, because the archetype explains why they got the score.

The archetype also explains failure modes. A Specialist Operator who tries to migrate to Architect Generalist in one move usually fails because the migration crosses two structural boundaries (depth-to-breadth and operator-to-architect). The two-step migration (Specialist Operator → Specialist Architect → Architect Generalist) is structurally cleaner. The archetype framework predicts these failure patterns; the score doesn't.

How to use your archetype

Treat it as a structural starting position, not a destination. Read the Acceleration Plan calibration that points from your current archetype toward the right migration target. Track your archetype across re-assessments at 6-month intervals; archetype shift is a leading indicator of Authority Band shift, which is a leading indicator of Compression Exposure Index movement.
